Where We Work
PAIRS supports the development of sustainable paediatric and newborn resuscitation training across several partner countries. Each setting progresses at its own pace, with programmes led by local faculty and supported by Irish volunteers where needed. Below is an overview of current activity, programme status, and recent training events.
Tanzania
Tanzania remains the most mature PAIRS site, with Dar es Salaam acting as the national governance hub. MNH leads coordination across regional hospitals, with established hubs at KCMC (Moshi) and Bugando Medical Centre (Mwanza). The March/April 2026 BMC programme certified 17 new trainers, expanded multidisciplinary faculty capacity, and demonstrated strong local leadership despite logistical challenges. A formal evaluation of the PAIRS TTT model was completed in 2026, supported by RCPI and MNH.
Dar es Salaam: Ongoing QuickPAIRS, Basic, Plus, and TTT delivery
KCMC Moshi: TTT planned for October 2026
BMC Mwanza: TTT delivered March/April 2026; next programme planned Spring 2027
17 new trainers certified at BMC; local action plans developed
National MEAL workshops and TTT evaluation supported through IGHN Small Grant Award

Uganda
Uganda continues to demonstrate strong national leadership in PAIRS implementation. In 2026, twelve Master Trainers completed an independent Train‑the‑Trainer programme, preparing eight new instructors and bringing the national total to 109 trained PAIRS instructors. Faculty are actively engaged in a series of harmonisation workshops with the Ministry of Health to align PAIRS content with national guidelines, supported by Nurture Africa. Recent missions have also strengthened local ownership, with Ugandan faculty coordinating recruitment, logistics, and delivery across multiple sites.

Despite conflict‑related challenges, the Sudanese faculty have delivered training across several regions. In December 2025, they ran the first QuickPAIRS courses at Port Sudan Paediatric Teaching Hospital. A four‑day TTT programme is planned for December 2026, and the first cohort of 18 learners has commenced PAIRS ImPACT.

Training was delivered at ESUTH (Enugu) and AEFUTH (Abakaliki), with 51 staff completing PAIRS Basic, 10 progressing through an abridged TTT pathway, and 16 midwives trained in QuickPAIRS Neonatal. Ten new PAIRS trainers were identified across both hospitals. Despite strong local interest, instability in the region continues to affect programme development and limits follow‑up visits.

Abridged advanced PAIRS + mini‑TTT delivered (10 learners)
QuickPAIRS Neonatal delivered to 16 midwives
Joint ESUTH–AEFUTH commitment to a shared PAIRS programme
